The world must feel alive, no matter if the world is the Backrooms. There must be ways for the player to alter the world and see it react in different ways, which can allow for different plays to be done:
Breaking lights

In lit up interior biomes, the player can break the lights in a room to make it go dark. This has multiple effects
</aside>
- In a dark room Backrooms Rats will spawn. They prefer darkness, so they may leave their hiding places in the wall, especially if there are Rat holes nearby
- The player can place bait in that room to increase the chance of rats leaving their hiding places. Rats can eat the bait or take it and run away if it’s small enough. This requires skill though, as catching a rat isn’t easy until you find/craft a mouse trap
- You cannot grow vegetables or plants in dark rooms, but Mushrooms grow much faster in the dark
- Darkness + Moisture = Prime condition for mold to grow
Mold & Mold growth

Mold is an important part of the Backrooms ecosystem. You can take advantage of it!
</aside>
- Read Mold
- Any mold is Paused by the presence of a light source in the room. This means that over several blackouts mold can slowly creep in
- Mold is predatory in any stage - any plants and animals will slowly get poisoned and die if they are in a room with mold. Rats cannot spawn in a moldy room
Moisture
<aside>

Rooms can get damp and moist with various factors. You can use it for your advantage
</aside>
- If the room has a leaky tile it contributes to its general moisture. The more unsealed leaks - the more moist the room gets
- The player can also break a radiator or bring in an air moisturiser to increase the moisture artificially
- The player can also fix leaks to make the room more dry
- A room has 3 states of moisture - Dry → Damp → Moist
- Dry rooms:
- These rooms are the safest to live in - as they have less overall diseases and replenish more tiredness when sleeping
- Over time dry rooms can accumulate dust. This process is slow and depends on the size of the room. Wooden props, cloth furniture and dirt bags in the room also increase the speed at which dust accumulates
- To prevent that, the player must place adequate air ventilation, or manually blow away the dust using a large piece of cardboard
- Staying too long in a dusty room will lead to coughing and eventual Bronchitis
- Neither mushrooms nor plants can grow in dry rooms. Plants die if not watered manually
- Damp rooms:
- These rooms are the most commonly found rooms - their air is slightly more moist than dry rooms.
- Plants grow at a slow rate, but do not die from lack of moisture when left alone. Watering increases their growth speed
- [No clue help with this]
- Moist rooms:
- In moist rooms condensate can appear on the walls and be collected with rags/clothes and etc. This condensate is dirty however, so it must be purified
- In moist rooms mold can grow when they are in the darkness. This also applies during Blackouts, so the room must be constantly kept in check and any mold scrubbed off
- Plants grow much faster in moist rooms, as if they are constantly watered
- Moist rooms create stains which can be removed using cleaning supplies. Stains are purely a visual feature
