The Cartographers have the best orientation skills because of their Map.
The map is a top down stylized plan of the backrooms that shows all of the walls in a drawn aesthetic. These walls appear with every chunk that is generated, with the range being a skill you can upgrade (starts with the render distance, and then gets upgraded to the chunk load distance)
The map also shows various Points of Interest, like loot bags, outposts and entities (when the skill for enemy location is unlocked) as dots/icons on the map. The player is represented by the usual arrow that points in the direction of the player relative to the X and Y positions
The chunks that are not loaded in are shown in a “fog of war” fashion, as well as the biomes being marked and separated via labels and colours.
Selecting a quill that is near the map view will cause the map to switch to scribing mode. This allows the player to draw onto the map, add arrows, stickers and when holding down add a waypoint
These drawings will always be below the player indicator
This is useful when you wanna mark passageways and paths to not get too lost
It’s an unlockable skill nearing the end-game, where the map is loaded and displayed in the top-right corner. It rotates with the player orientation, making the player constantly look towards “north”. All of the features except for biome labels are copied from the map view
It is similar to the RPG game compass, but instead of pointing north due to lore reasons, it points away from the centre of the backrooms AKA The Nexus. It changes its X position depending on the angle of the player related to the angle at which the player is looking directly towards the Nexus. This is done by having a giant metallic orb hanging in the air in the Nexus, created in collaboration with the Fireflies for its mechanics and the Drifters for its increased range
You can place waypoints which will constantly display through walls as an icon, and when directly looked at will show the distance and name of the waypoint. They can be hidden and shown in the Map view to not display in-game, and they fade away when you are less than 5 meters away from them
